What to Expect at Your First Bespoke Fitting Appointment

If you’ve never been to a bespoke tailor before, the first appointment can feel intimidating. It doesn’t need to be. Here’s a complete walkthrough of exactly what happens when you walk into Tony Tailor for the first time — so you can arrive relaxed and prepared.

Before You Arrive: What to Bring

  • A well-fitting shirt — we measure over your shirt, so wear one you’d typically wear under a suit
  • Your dress shoes (or the shoes you’ll wear with the suit) — trouser length is measured with the shoes you’ll actually wear
  • Inspiration photos (optional) — screenshots from Instagram, Pinterest, magazines, or anywhere else. Even rough ideas help start the conversation
  • An open mind — our tailors will suggest what flatters your body type; you don’t need to arrive with every detail decided

The Consultation (15–20 Minutes)

We start by talking — not measuring. We want to understand:

  • What’s the occasion? (Wedding, work, special event, or building a wardrobe?)
  • What’s your lifestyle? (Do you sit at a desk all day, or are you on your feet?)
  • Do you run warm or cold? (Affects fabric weight and canvas construction)
  • Do you prefer a classic or contemporary silhouette?
  • Any preferences on details — lapel width, buttons, pockets, lining color?

You don’t need answers to all of these. That’s what we’re here for. Our tailors will guide you based on your body type, the occasion, and what tends to look best.

Fabric Selection

We’ll pull out sample books and let you feel the fabrics. We’ll explain the weight, weave, and performance characteristics of each option. For most clients in Brandon and the greater Tampa Bay area, we steer toward lighter-weight wools and wool-linen blends that handle Florida’s heat without sacrificing structure.

Don’t feel pressured to decide immediately. Some clients need to see fabrics in natural light. We’re happy to let you take swatches home.

The Measurements (20–30 Minutes)

This is the heart of the bespoke process. We take 30+ measurements — far more than you’d expect. The key ones:

  • Chest — at the fullest point
  • Waist — at the natural waist, not belt line
  • Seat — fullest point of the hips
  • Shoulder width — the most critical measurement for jacket fit
  • Back length — from neck to natural waist
  • Sleeve length — shoulder point to wrist bone
  • Trouser inseam and outseam
  • Posture notes — forward shoulders, high hip, spinal curvature, etc.

We also note your posture. Most people have some asymmetry — one shoulder slightly higher, one arm slightly longer. Bespoke is the only garment format that accounts for this, which is a major reason a bespoke suit looks so different on the body compared to anything else.

Design Details

After measurements, we finalize the design choices:

  • Lapel style and width
  • Number of buttons and button stance
  • Pocket style (flap, jetted, patch)
  • Lining fabric and color
  • Trouser style (flat front or pleated, cuffed or plain hem)
  • Any personal details — monogram placement, contrasting buttonholes, etc.

What Happens Next

After your first appointment, we draft your unique pattern and cut the fabric. Depending on the garment and timeline, you’ll return in 2–4 weeks for a baste fitting — the garment assembled loosely so we can check the fit before final stitching. This is where we make any structural adjustments.

The final fitting follows 2–3 weeks after that. Any last tweaks are made on the spot, and you leave with your finished garment.
